Wood Batik
Artists
Wantoro is a fine wood batik artist, the
founder of a small home industry that produces functional wood batik. He
and his wife employ men and women from his village of Bantul, island of
Java, Indonesia. Historically Bantul has relied heavily upon artisan
trades due to the arid climate inhospitable to agriculture.
Wantoro's workshop was
destroyed during the May 2006 earthquake. With the help of Color Island
he has started to rebuild his workshop and hire back workers
from his community. |

artist from Central Java, Indonesia. He created a small cottage business
where he can express his passion for the batik art form. He creates his
own designs and does all his own lay-out drawing.
It is important and gratifying to
Trisno to pass on his knowledge. He employs high school students to not
only help them finance higher education, but instill in another generation
an appreciation for the rich artistic culture found all throughout
Indonesia. Trisno keeps track of his students and can proudly name those
who have graduated from college.

Torajan Wood
Carver
Lius is a senior traditional wood carver from
Toraja, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. His expertise is in the carving of
symbolic designs that adorn the entire exterior of traditional Torajan
houses called Tongkonan. He has utilized his house carving skills in the
creation of individual art such as boxes, trays and rice containers.
These pieces like the Tongkonan, are colored with natural dyes.
Besides making his own carvings, Lius employs

Leather Puppet
Artist
Darmono and Jogya
Earthquake 2006.
Darmono, a modest shadow puppet artist and
bread-winner for an extended family, lost his entire workshop and
inventory. He is a very talented artist with high standards that creates
excruciatingly detailed and fine work.
Shadow puppets are made
from leather, and hand carved to create mythical figures for local
puppet-masters and some tourist trade.
His family prepares the
leather for his puppets employing age-old methods including hand curing,
stretching and scraping of the hides to achieve the right rigidity and
thickness.
Our financial help allowed
Darmono and his family to survive and rebuild the family house and his
workshop. During a visit in Spring of 2007, it was a joy to see him, his
family back on their feet working again. Of course, we brought back some
his fine leather puppets, too.
