Wood Batik Artists

Wantoro is a fine wood batik artist, the founder of a small home industry that produces functional wood batik. He and his wife employ men and women from his village of Bantul, island of Java, Indonesia. Historically Bantul has relied heavily upon artisan trades due to the arid climate inhospitable to agriculture.

Wantoro's workshop was destroyed during the May 2006 earthquake. With the help of Color Island he has started to rebuild his workshop and hire back workers from his community.

Trisno is a talented batik artist from Central Java, Indonesia. He created a small cottage business where he can express his passion for the batik art form. He creates his own designs and does all his own lay-out drawing.

It is important and gratifying to Trisno to pass on his knowledge. He employs high school students to not only help them finance higher education, but instill in another generation an appreciation for the rich artistic culture found all throughout Indonesia. Trisno keeps track of his students and can proudly name those who have graduated from college.

Torajan Wood Carver

Lius is a senior traditional wood carver from Toraja, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. His expertise is in the carving of symbolic designs that adorn the entire exterior of traditional Torajan houses called Tongkonan. He has utilized his house carving skills in the creation of individual art such as boxes, trays and  rice containers. These pieces like the Tongkonan, are colored with natural dyes.

Besides making his own carvings, Lius employs younger artists in his shop. This hands-on supervision not only ensures the next generation of carvers but also the livelihood of the community.

Leather Puppet Artist

Darmono and Jogya Earthquake 2006.

Darmono, a modest shadow puppet artist and bread-winner for an extended family, lost his entire workshop and inventory. He is a very talented artist with high standards that creates excruciatingly detailed and fine work.

Shadow puppets are made from leather, and hand carved to create mythical figures for local puppet-masters and some tourist trade.

His family prepares the leather for his puppets employing age-old methods including hand curing, stretching and scraping of the hides to achieve the right rigidity and thickness.

Our financial help allowed Darmono and his family to survive and rebuild the family house and his workshop. During a visit in Spring of 2007, it was a joy to see him, his family back on their feet working again. Of course, we brought back some his fine leather puppets, too.

Kalpika Batik Center

Kalpika Batik Center is a community center of batik study in Taman Sari, Jogyakarta, Indonesia. It is located within the Sultan’s Palace or Keraton.

It teaches the highly defined local technique of batik painting and Keraton motif, the motif symbolic of and unique to the Sultan. Typical designs of batik painting are reflective of daily life in the province of Jogyakarta.

Watie is a young Muslim woman that supports herself with her artistic talents. She is very strong in Batik and also paints and teaches at an Art College in Jogyakarta.

Watik had an art studio and shop in Jogjakarta that was destroyed in the 2005 earthquake. Typically, her first priority was to help other artists and friends worse off than herself. She is originally from the port city of Surabaya and favors wearing camo.

For her delightful work, her selfless attitude and sunny disposition, we are happy to introducing her art to a wider audience.

Pungki is a Master Batik artist at the well know, KalpikaBatikCenter inJogyakarta, Indonesia. The Center is located within the Sultan's Palace (or Keraton) and teaches the highly stylized locally created technique of Batik Painting and also traditional Keraton motif. This motif is symbolic of and unique to the Sultan. The center also encourages new designs and directions in Batik.

While Batik Painting is typically reflective of dailiy life in the province of jogyakarta, Pungki's idea for a children's line came from the artists love of family and is unique to him.ColorIsland is delighted to present Pungki's work for the pleasure and joy of children everywhere.

Beaded Scarf Designer

Ariani is a leading designer of beaded scarves and other women's accessories. She employs a group of women in her community to produce her merchandize, offering them a choice other than the heavy lifting construction jobs that rural women normally work.

Jewelry Artists

Nyoman Ari was born into a silversmith family in the village of Celuk, Bali, Indonesia. It is long renowned as the island's center of silver production. Ari began learning to craft silver jewelry when he was a little boy. His interest of the silver jewelry arts became a passion, he eventually decided to build his own silver workshop in his village to explore some of his own ideas of design.

Ari's genius is combining traditional designs in silver with local shells and coral to create naturally elegant design.

Jumiran creates jewelry and is the founder of a small jewelry home industry in Kota Gede, Jogyakarta, Indonesia. The town is known for its traditional silver craft. Jumiran’s intricate and distinctive creations include sculpture in silver, copper and brass as well as traditional jewelry.

Like most of the local producers, his craft was passed down. And while embracing traditional techniques and designs, Jumiran also loves to meld new ideas into the old.
