Motif & Batik Process
These ceplok motifs kawung and jlamprang make a perfect geometry and balance. Kawung found on Prambanan, a Javanese Hindu Temple built in 8th century, and adopted as batik motif in 18th century during Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Kingdom. It was reserved for royal court. Inspired by the balanced palm fruits shape, it's a symbol of perfect self control, and honesty. Jlamprang was created during Mataram Kingdom in 17th century, in North Coast of Java, influenced by Islamic culture. It has a square shape with vines and red lotus in the center, a symbol of thanksgiving. This motif is also used for ceremonial, as a symbol of connection with God. See Batik Patterns & Motifs for more info.
Both canting (hand-drawn tool) and copper stamp are used for applying malam (hot wax) to create the design on this silk scarf. The silk is then hand dipped in dye a few times to achieve the black color intended. The silk covered by the wax resist the dye. The silk is dipped in boiling water to remove the wax and dried under the sunlight to bring out the vibrant color. The wax then going through recycling process to be re-used. See Batik Art for more info.
Fringe finish at ends are carefully hand twisted.
