Motif & Batik Process

This is a stunning lung-lungan, flowers, buds and leaves, and nitik Truntum. The Lung-lungan lush and growing vine or stem with leaves, buds and flowers a symbol of a flourished life, bringing many blessings and happiness. Truntum traditionally worn at wedding ceremony by bride and grooms' parents as a wishes for a loving marriage life and a symbol of the parent's guidance for the newly wed. It created by Queen Kencono in 18th century. The motif is originated from the North Coast of Java island with a mixed of Islamic and European influence. See Batik Patterns & Motifs for more info.

Both canting (hand-drawn tool) and copper stamp are used for applying malam (hot wax) to create the design on this silk scarf. The silk is then hand dipped in dye for a few times to achieve the color intended. The silk covered by wax resist the dye. This process is repeated for each color, then silk is dipped in boiling water to remove the wax and dried under the sunlight to bring out the vibrant color. Fringe finish at ends are carefully hand twisted.
