Motif & Batik Process

This motif is a beautiful geometrical, called Kawung Lereng and Lung-Lungan. One of the oldest design, Kawung was reserved for royal court. The balanced palm fruits shape is a symbol of a perfect self control. Lereng (diagonal) symbolizes faith, hard work and perseverance. The lush and growing vine or stem lung-lungan a symbol of a flourish live, bringing many blessings and happiness. Both canting (hand-drawn tool) and copper stamp are used for applying malam (hot wax) to create the design on this silk scarf. The silk is then hand dipped in dye for a few times to achieve the color intended. The silk covered by wax resist the dye. This process is repeated for each color, then silk is dipped in boiling water to remove the wax and dried under the sunlight to bring out the vibrant color.
