This luxury all season scarf is an original batik, one of a kind, handmade by the fifth generation of highly respected and finest batik artist family in Cirebon, a batik town in North Coast of West Java.

Motif & Batik Process

This Mega Mendung ("Clouds") motif symbolizes the long-awaited carrier of rain as the bearer of fertility and the giver of life. Inspired by Chinese ceramics clouds motif brought by traders from China in 16th century on the North Coast of Java island. The ground that receive the rain symbolized by ceplok image as squares, circles and flowers. Lung-lungan as flowers and leaves a symbol of fertility, a flourished, prosper and happy life. See Batik Patterns & Motifs for more info.

Both canting (hand-drawn tool) and copper stamp are used for applying malam (hot wax) to create the design on this silk scarf. The silk is then hand dipped in dye for a few times to achieve the color intended. The silk covered by wax resist the dye. This process is repeated for each color, then silk is dipped in boiling water to remove the wax and dried under the sunlight to bring out the vibrant color. Fringe finish at ends are carefully hand twisted.
