Motif & Batik Process

This is a geometrical motif, called ceplok. This perfect geometry shows flowers connected to diagonal stripes as a balance and flourish live. The motif is originated from the North Coast of Java island. See Batik Patterns & Motifs for more info.

Both canting (hand-drawn tool) and copper stamp are used for applying malam (hot wax) to create the design on this silk scarf. The silk is then hand dipped in dye for a few times to achieve the color intended. The silk covered by wax resist the dye. This process is repeated for each color, then silk is dipped in boiling water to remove the wax and dried under the sunlight to bring out the vibrant color. Fringe finish at ends are carefully hand twisted.
